During the bustling steamboat era, Washington, Louisiana was the largest inland port between New Orleans and St. Louis. The turnaround point is a fascinating and iconic reminder of Washington’s rich history. Navigating the bayous was not an easy task, and ‘U’ shaped points, similar to this one, allowed boats to changed direction in the narrow bodies of water. The turnaround is easily accessible by canoe from the public boat launch, located behind the catfish festival grounds.
